Eastern Kentucky EMS Symposium - Events Overview
Introduction and Welcome
Leave your khaki’s at home and come enjoy a relaxing weekend at one of the most scenic areas of Kentucky as we learn the latest technologies and treatments in the world of emergency medicine. Shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes are the dress code of the day...
Bring your whole family as we have several planned activities for them to participate in while you are in class. They can take a hike, ride a chair lift, explore a cave, or just relax around the pool. If you are craving a weekend away from the cell phone and the stressors of everyday life come join us for the 2nd Annual EKEMS Symposium at Natural Bridge State Park.
How it all Began
The 1st Annual EKEMS Symposium was a collaborative effort between Estill County EMS, The Kentucky River Health Network, and LifeNet Air Medical Services. John Isfort, Director of Kentucky River Health Network, states “we wanted to provide quality education for the medical professional that was “out of the ordinary” at a reasonable cost.” The Symposium was deemed a success with about 45 students who received 15 CEU’s for $25. The three agencies decided to make it an annual event.
The EKEMS Symposium is somewhat unique because it brings together a broad spectrum of medical professionals with a desire to expand their knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s no secret that students learn better when they are comfortable, well nourished, and in an environment that is conducive to learning. We encourage you to dress comfortable, prepare to be well fed, and enjoy the rustic outdoors of east Kentucky.
Last year we were able to offer a package that included 15 CEU’s and 3 meals for $25. (Lodging is not included but can be purchased at a discount rate) We felt like this was very affordable considering the speakers involved were some of the top experts in their respective fields. How do we top last year? We simply bump it up a notch by offering 20 CEU’s for $25, same meal plan with an expanded list of dynamic speakers.
The symposium kicks off on Friday night with registration at 5 pm and an airway workshop from 6 to 9pm. On Saturday we have early registration at 7:30am with the first lecture beginning at 8am and wrapping up at 5:30pm. At 6:00pm Troy the park manager fires up the grill for an old fashioned summer time cookout complete with hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and all the trimmings. We call this “Cookout with the Vendors” which gives our vendors some time to show their products and services and offers some excellent networking opportunities. On Sunday the first lecture begins at 8:00am and ends at 5:30pm with the presentation of certificates.
This year’s educational recipe begins with about two thirds medicine mixed with one third law with just a dash of venomous snakes thrown in for seasoning. Come and enjoy.
